24th March: The Geoportal Goes Online
The development of the geoportal for the cultural assets of the Val Gardena region is nearing completion, and the portal will go online on 24 March 2025. For the first time, there will be a digital platform that not only presents the cultural heritage of our valley but also geographically localizes it. With this project, the Museum Gherdëina offers users the opportunity to establish a concrete link between an object and its find or location. The concept behind the geoportal is a simple: selected cultural artefacts from the Museum Gherdëina's collection and objects representative of Val Gardena's building culture are presented on a digital map. For example, archaeological and palaeontological finds are linked to their locations, typical local minerals to the geological features of the Alpe di Siusi, and works of art to their production centers or the architecture that once surrounded them. In this way, the geoportal connects the region’s history with its unique landscape and allows visitors to interactively explore its cultural diversity.
Map, Objects, Tours
The geoportal also provides a range of additional information in the form of explanatory texts, photos and videos for each object presented, allowing users to familiarise themselves with the respective object. Tour suggestions are also available, making the geoportal an essential tool for locals, visitors interested in culture, and the tourism sector. The geoportal was launched as part of the European Union's funding programme for transformation in the creative cultural sector, with a contribution from the Italian Ministry of Culture (Mission 1 - Investment 3.3.2 of the PNRR reconstruction programme).
It will go online at the end of March and the official presentation will take place on 24 March 2025 at 20:00 in the main hall of the Museum Gherdëina. Afterward, we invite you to take a tour of the museum and view some of the originals up close. Admission is free.
